SOLIDWORKS VAR comparison
GoEngineer vs. Hawk Ridge Systems vs. TriMech: 2026 SOLIDWORKS VAR Pricing, Support SLAs & Renewal Audit
All three resellers sell the same Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS licenses, so the product is not what you are comparing. You are comparing discount, renewal uplift, support terms and add-on bundling, and on a 20-seat Professional estate an uncapped 9.5% yearly uplift costs about $15,400 more over three years than a 3% cap.
01The short answer: compare the quote, not the reseller
GoEngineer, Hawk Ridge Systems and TriMech are value-added resellers (VARs) of the same SOLIDWORKS product line. The software, the license keys and the core feature set are identical whichever VAR invoices you. What changes from one VAR to the next is the commercial wrapper: the discount off list, the yearly renewal uplift, whether cloud or PLM add-ons are bundled into the renewal, the support and training package, and how a lapsed maintenance contract is reinstated.
That means the right question is not which VAR is best. It is which written quote gives you the lowest three-year cost for the seats you actually use, with the contract terms you need. Engineer Aid is independent of all three and of Dassault Systèmes; we compare structures and benchmarks, not reputations.
Three numbers decide most renewals:
- Seat price by tier. Typical 2025-2026 term pricing is $3,150 (Standard), $3,800 (Professional) and $5,100 (Premium) per seat per year.
- Renewal uplift. Uncapped renewals commonly drift about 9.5% a year, more when 3DEXPERIENCE cloud services are added.
- Seat mix. Named seats held by occasional users are often the largest single overpayment, ahead of price.
02Regional territories decide who can actually quote you
SOLIDWORKS is sold through regional VARs, so you may not be able to get a quote from all three. Many buyers find that only one or two of these resellers will quote a given site, and that the incumbent VAR on record handles the renewal by default. Before you plan a competitive benchmark, ask each VAR in writing whether it can quote and support your billing address and each engineering site.
Territory matters most in three situations:
- Multi-site firms. A company with plants in two regions may hold seats with two VARs on two renewal dates. Consolidating dates gives you one negotiation instead of two weak ones.
- Acquisitions. An acquired business often brings its own VAR relationship and maintenance terms. Audit both contracts before the first combined renewal.
- Canada and cross-border estates. TriMech is reported to operate with Javelin Technologies in Canada; confirm which entity invoices and in which currency.
If only one VAR can quote you, your leverage moves from competition to structure: term versus perpetual, multi-year price caps, seat re-tiering (Premium to Professional where simulation is unused) and removing bundled add-ons. Those levers still move a renewal by 10% to 30% on most estates we benchmark.
03SOLIDWORKS tier benchmarks to hold every VAR quote against
Use these as the typical 2025-2026 market ranges. A quote above the top of the range needs a written reason (bundled training, add-ons, a support upgrade). A quote far below it usually means a multi-year commitment or a seat count you should double-check.
| Tier | Annual term benchmark | Observed term range | Perpetual + yearly maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $3,150 / yr | $2,820-$3,480 | $4,195 + $1,295 / yr |
| Professional | $3,800 / yr | $3,456-$4,152 | $5,490 + $1,595 / yr |
| Premium | $5,100 / yr | $4,716-$5,496 | $7,995 + $1,995 / yr |
| Floating (SNL) seat | +24% over node-locked | +20% to +30% | Same premium applies to maintenance |
| Lapsed maintenance reinstatement | n/a | $500-$1,500+ per seat | Or forced move to term |
Perpetual math for comparison: a Professional perpetual seat costs $5,490 plus $1,595 a year, so $10,275 over three years, against $11,400 for three years of term at $3,800. Perpetual wins only if you keep maintenance current; one lapse and the reinstatement charge can erase the gap.
04Worked example: what an uncapped uplift costs over three years
Take a 20-seat SOLIDWORKS Professional estate at the $3,800 benchmark, so $76,000 in year one. Compare an uncapped renewal that drifts 9.5% a year with a renewal where you negotiated a 3% yearly cap in writing.
| Year | Uncapped (9.5%/yr) | Capped (3%/yr) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $76,000 | $76,000 | $0 |
| Year 2 | $83,220 | $78,280 | $4,940 |
| Year 3 | $91,126 | $80,628 | $10,498 |
| 3-year total | $250,346 | $234,908 | $15,438 |
The arithmetic: $76,000 x 1.095 = $83,220, x 1.095 again = $91,126. With the cap, $76,000 x 1.03 = $78,280, then $80,628. The cap clause is worth $15,438, about 6% of the uncapped total, before any discount. Ask every VAR to state the year-two and year-three price as a number, not a percentage of a future list price.
05Support tiers, training and bundled add-ons: what to line up
The differences between VARs that buyers actually feel are in services: technical support response times, training credits, implementation help for PDM, and which add-ons appear on the renewal. None of these are standardized, so put each quote into the same grid before you compare totals.
- Support response. Ask for the response-time commitment in hours, by severity, and whether it is contractual or a service goal.
- Training credits. Ask whether unused credits expire at renewal. Credits you never redeem are a price increase in disguise.
- Bundled products. CAM, simulation, electrical or 3DEXPERIENCE cloud seats often ride along on renewals. Each one needs a named user and a usage record, or it comes off.
- PDM and implementation. Services quoted with the renewal should carry their own statement of work and hourly or fixed price.
Our individual audits go deeper on each reseller: the GoEngineer renewal audit, the Hawk Ridge Systems support tier audit and the TriMech enterprise license audit. Each lists the clauses to check, not claims about the vendor.
06Seat mix often beats discount: named vs. floating math
Before you argue about 5% off, check who uses each seat. Pull the license-server logs (the SolidNetWork License manager records checkouts) or SOLIDWORKS usage reports for the last 90 days. Firms routinely renew floating pools running below 35% peak concurrency, while a well-sized pool runs at 72% to 85%.
Worked example: 13 occasional users each hold a named Professional seat, so 13 x $3,800 = $49,400 a year. Moving them to floating seats at the +24% premium costs $4,712 per seat.
- At the benchmark 2.6:1 user-to-seat ratio you need 5 floating seats: 5 x $4,712 = $23,560, a saving of $25,840 (52%).
- At a cautious 2:1 ratio you need 7 seats: 7 x $4,712 = $32,984, a saving of $16,416 (33%).
Either way the seat change saves more than most negotiated discounts on this group. The CAD license audit calculator runs the same math on your full estate.
07Contract clauses to check in any SOLIDWORKS VAR order form
Most of the money in a VAR renewal is decided by a handful of clauses, not by the headline discount. The same clauses appear, in different wording, in order forms from any reseller. Read each one and decide whether it is acceptable before you compare totals, because a low price with a weak clause is often the more expensive deal by year three.
| Clause | What to ask | Buyer-side target |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal price | Is the year-two price a number or a percentage of future list? | Fixed numbers for each year of the term |
| Uplift cap | Is there a written ceiling on yearly increases? | 3% to 5% per year, in the order form |
| Seat reduction | Can seats be dropped at renewal without penalty? | Yes, with 30-60 days notice |
| Bundled products | Which cloud or add-on items are included, and can they be removed? | Line-item prices, removable individually |
| Auto-renewal | Does the contract renew automatically, and with what notice window? | Notice window of at least 60 days, by email |
| Training credits | Do unused credits expire or roll over? | Roll over at least one term |
If a VAR receives a compliance or usage query from Dassault Systèmes on your account, the clause that matters is who handles it and what data is shared. Our compliance letter defense guide covers that case separately.
08How to run a fair three-VAR benchmark
- Start 60 to 120 days out. Inside 30 days the incumbent knows you have no time to switch.
- Send one identical request. Same seat count by tier, same license type, same term length, same support level. Ask for line-item pricing.
- Ask for the cap in numbers. Year two and year three prices, written into the order form.
- Strip the bundle. Request a quote with and without cloud and add-on products so you see their real price.
- Check maintenance status. Confirm which perpetual seats are current, so nobody quotes a reinstatement fee you do not owe.
- Decide on total three-year cost. Not on year-one price.
If a VAR declines to quote because of territory, record that and use the structural levers above with the VAR that can. If you also run other CAD platforms, compare against the SOLIDWORKS vs. Creo vs. NX five-year TCO before you lock a multi-year term.

Questions buyers ask
Is SOLIDWORKS cheaper from GoEngineer, Hawk Ridge Systems or TriMech?
The software is the same Dassault Systèmes product from all three, so the difference is the discount, renewal uplift and bundled services in each written quote. Hold each quote against the typical benchmark of $3,800 per Professional term seat per year (range $3,456-$4,152) and compare three-year totals, not year-one price.
Can I switch SOLIDWORKS resellers?
Often yes, but SOLIDWORKS VARs are regional, so not every reseller can quote every site. Ask each VAR in writing whether it can quote and support your locations, and start the process 60 to 120 days before your renewal so a transfer does not run into the deadline.
How much does SOLIDWORKS maintenance go up each year?
Uncapped renewals commonly drift about 9.5% a year, and 8% to 14% when cloud services are bundled in. On 20 Professional seats that adds roughly $15,400 over three years compared with a written 3% cap, so ask for the year-two and year-three prices as fixed numbers.
What happens if I let SOLIDWORKS perpetual maintenance lapse?
Reinstating lapsed maintenance commonly costs $500 to $1,500 or more per seat in back-maintenance, or the VAR may steer you to a term subscription. Check each perpetual seat's maintenance status before renewal so you only pay for seats you will keep current.
Are floating SOLIDWORKS licenses worth the extra cost?
A floating SolidNetWork seat costs about 24% more than a node-locked seat, so it pays when more than roughly 1.24 users share each seat. At a typical 2.6:1 ratio, 13 occasional users need 5 floating seats instead of 13 named ones, saving about $25,800 a year at Professional pricing.
