Tool 05 · AI copilot ROI
AI CAD and engineering copilot ROI and ITAR / IP security scorecard
Model the hours an engineering copilot gives back, net of seat cost and secure-deployment uplift, and score how ready your PDM and compliance regime are for one. ITAR and EAR teams get an isolated-deployment architecture by default.
01How ROI is calculated
Defaults: 20 engineers, mechanical CAD workflow, $95/hr, 60% adoption. That gives 1,656 hours a year, $157,320 of time, 12 seats at $1,800 = $21,600, and a net $135,720. The hours-saved figures are planning assumptions; measure them in a pilot before you buy at scale.
| Workflow | Typical tools | Hours/week | Seat benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical 3D CAD & DFMA | Leo AI, Hestus, Backflip AI | 3.0 | ~$1,800/yr |
| Civil & geotech takeoff | Civils.ai | 2.5 | ~$3,240/yr ($270/mo Pro) |
| AEC Revit / AutoCAD QA/QC | Structured AI | 3.5 | ~$720/yr (two tools) |
02The security score
The score starts from your PDM or PLM, because a copilot can only respect the permissions it inherits. Teamcenter and Windchill score highest, SOLIDWORKS PDM and Vault next, loose cloud or local folders lowest. Commercial teams gain points; ITAR, EAR and CMMC teams lose points until the deployment is isolated.
| Regime | Architecture | Contract terms |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial | Cloud SaaS with SSO | Zero data retention, no training on your data |
| ISO 13485 medical | Private-tenant SaaS | Audit logs, validation records for the QMS |
| ITAR / EAR / CMMC | Isolated VPC or on-prem model | US-person access, no foreign servers (22 CFR 120-130) |
Vendor-by-vendor detail is in the mechanical copilot comparison and the enterprise security audit.

Questions buyers ask
Do AI CAD copilots pay for themselves?
Usually, if adoption is real. Twenty mechanical engineers at $95/hr saving three hours a week at 60% adoption reclaim about 1,656 hours a year, roughly $157,000 of time against about $21,600 of seats.
Can ITAR teams use cloud AI tools?
Not with controlled technical data on shared public infrastructure. ITAR (22 CFR 120-130) limits who and where technical data can be accessed; defense teams generally need an isolated VPC or on-premises deployment with US-person access controls.
What contract terms matter most when buying an AI engineering tool?
Zero data retention, no training on customer data, data residency, a SOC 2 Type II report, breach notification timelines and access scoped to vault permissions.
How should we measure a pilot?
Pick three to five engineers, log time on the target tasks for two weeks before and four weeks during the pilot, and count rework. Buy seats only for the workflows that showed a measured saving.
