Ansys Licensing Audit: Mechanical, Fluent CFD, HPC Workgroup Packs & Elastic Currency Breakeven

An Ansys renewal should be judged by solver hours actually used. At typical 2025-2026 benchmarks a Mechanical or Fluent lease runs about $22,000 per solver seat per year, a base seat unlocks only 4 cores, and an HPC pack for 32-core scaling adds about $12,500. When a seat and its HPC capacity run fewer than about 28 hours a week, pay-per-use elastic or cloud burst licensing is often cheaper; above that, the annual lease usually wins.

01What an Ansys lease renewal typically contains

Ansys simulation software is commonly licensed as an annual lease (you pay each year for the right to run the solver) with optional add-ons for parallel computing and pay-per-use capacity. Engineer Aid is independent of Ansys and of every reseller. This page is a buyer's checklist for an Ansys renewal, whether sold direct or through a channel partner.

A typical renewal has four kinds of lines.

  • Solver seats: Mechanical, Fluent, HFSS or a multiphysics bundle. Each seat lets one job run at a time. Benchmarks run $14,000 to $32,000 per seat per year, with $22,000 as a working figure; enterprise multiphysics bundles with HPC run $38,000 to $65,000 or more.
  • Pre- and post-processing seats: for meshing and results review, sometimes bundled, sometimes separate.
  • HPC licensing: a base solver seat runs on 4 cores. Running on more cores, which shortens solve time, needs HPC packs or HPC workgroup licenses. Buyers report $8,000 to $28,000 a year to scale to 32-128 cores, with $12,500 typical for 32-core scaling.
  • Elastic or pay-per-use units: a prepaid currency consumed when you run beyond your leased capacity, useful for peaks.

The audit question for every line is the same: how many hours a week did it actually run, on how many cores? License server logs answer that. Without them, a renewal is priced on memory and habit.

02Line items to check, with the question to ask

Use these benchmarks as typical 2025-2026 market ranges. A quote outside the range is a reason to ask, not a finding.

Ansys renewal line items and audit questions
LineTypical benchmarkQuestion to ask
Mechanical / Fluent solver seat$14,000-$32,000 / yr (benchmark $22,000)How many hours per week did each seat run last year?
HPC pack or workgroup$12,500 / yr for 32-core scalingWhat total core count does each pack combination unlock?
Multiphysics + HPC bundle$38,000-$65,000+ / yrWhich physics in the bundle did we actually solve?
Pre/post seatsOften bundledCan meshing and post-processing share one seat between users?
Elastic unitsPrepaid, consumed per useDo unused units roll over, and when do they expire?
Annual upliftCheck against last yearIs a multi-year cap available in writing?

Ask for the core count to be stated as a total for each combination of packs, rather than as pack quantities alone. Core scaling usually comes in steps, and buyers sometimes pay for a step they never reach because their hardware has fewer cores than the license allows.

03The breakeven formula: lease versus pay-per-use

The comparison is simple once you have hours from the logs.

Breakeven hours per year = Annual lease cost / Elastic cost per solver-hour

Below the breakeven, paying per use costs less. Above it, the lease is cheaper. Ask your reseller or Ansys for the elastic cost per solver-hour for your configuration in writing, because consumption rates vary with the product and the number of cores.

To show how the house 28-hours-a-week threshold arises, the table uses illustrative elastic costs: $24 per hour for a solver seat running with 32-core HPC, and $16 per hour for a seat on its base 4 cores. These are not quoted prices. Replace them with your own.

Breakeven utilization with illustrative elastic rates
ConfigurationAnnual leaseIllustrative elastic rateBreakeven hours / yrBreakeven hours / wk
Solver seat, 4 cores$22,000$16 / h1,37526.4
Solver seat + HPC pack, 32 cores$34,500$24 / h1,43827.6
HPC pack alone, extra cores$12,500$8 / h1,56330.0

Weekly figures divide by 52. If your engineers work a 40-hour week, a seat running 28 hours a week is busy 70% of the working week. Many teams overestimate their utilization by counting a seat as busy whenever someone has the application open, while the logs show the solver itself ran far fewer hours.

04Worked example: three solver seats and two HPC packs

A team leases 2 Mechanical seats and 1 Fluent seat at $22,000 each, plus 2 HPC packs at $12,500 each. Renewal total: 3 x $22,000 + 2 x $12,500 = $66,000 + $25,000 = $91,000.

License logs over 12 months show:

  • Mechanical seat A: 35 hours a week, or 1,820 hours a year. Elastic at $16 would cost 1,820 x $16 = $29,120, more than the $22,000 lease. Keep the lease.
  • Mechanical seat B: 12 hours a week, or 624 hours. Elastic: 624 x $16 = $9,984 against $22,000. Move to elastic, saving $12,016.
  • Fluent seat with HPC pack 1: 30 hours a week on 32 cores. Elastic: 1,560 x $24 = $37,440 against $34,500. Keep the lease.
  • HPC pack 2: used only for large runs that need cores beyond the first pack, 4 hours a week, or 208 hours. Extra cores on pay-per-use at the illustrative $8 an hour: 208 x $8 = $1,664 against $12,500. Move to pay-per-use, saving $10,836.

New annual cost: $22,000 + $9,984 + $34,500 + $1,664 = $68,148. Saving: $91,000 - $68,148 = $22,852, or 25.1%, with the same work done. The illustrative rates drive the result, so rerun the arithmetic with your quoted figures before acting.

05Before moving a seat to pay-per-use: practical checks

The arithmetic can favor elastic licensing while the practical picture does not. Check these points before changing a seat.

  • Peaks, not averages. A seat averaging 12 hours a week may run 40 hours in the month before a design review. Look at the busiest four weeks in the logs and price those on pay-per-use too. If the peak month alone approaches the lease cost, keep the lease.
  • Who waits when capacity is short? A leased seat is always there. Pay-per-use depends on having units in the account or a cloud queue that starts promptly. Ask how quickly additional units can be bought and activated.
  • Budget predictability. Finance teams often prefer a fixed lease. If you move seats to pay-per-use, set a monthly consumption alert and a cap, and report usage alongside the budget.
  • Hardware and data location. Cloud burst means model files leave your network. For export-controlled or customer-confidential work, confirm with your security lead where jobs run and where results are stored before switching.
  • Contract minimums. Some agreements require a minimum number of leased seats or a minimum spend to keep a discount. Ask whether dropping one seat changes the price of the rest.

Revisit the decision every renewal. Utilization changes as projects start and end, and last year's busy seat may be next year's idle one.

06Red flags, as questions

  • Do our machines have the cores the HPC license allows? A 128-core entitlement on a 64-core workstation pays for capacity you cannot use.
  • Were solver seats idle while jobs queued for HPC? Queues on one resource and idle time on another point to the wrong mix, not too little license.
  • Do elastic units expire? A prepaid balance that lapses at year-end turns flexibility into waste. Ask for rollover terms in writing.
  • Is the multiphysics bundle fully used? If only structural and thermal were solved, ask the price of separate seats for those physics.
  • Can a seat be dropped at renewal without losing the bundle discount on the rest? Ask for the price with one seat removed.
  • Is cloud capacity priced separately from the license? Cloud burst often has a compute charge on top of license consumption; ask for both.

07Step-by-step Ansys renewal audit

  1. Ninety days before expiry, export 12 months of license server logs for every solver, pre/post and HPC feature.
  2. Compute solver-run hours per week per seat, and cores used per job.
  3. Request an itemized quote with total cores per HPC combination and term dates.
  4. Ask in writing for elastic cost per solver-hour for each configuration and the rollover rules for units.
  5. Apply the breakeven formula to each seat and pack. Mark keep, move to elastic, or remove.
  6. Check your hardware core counts against HPC entitlements.
  7. Negotiate from the line-by-line result. The Ansys vs SOLIDWORKS Simulation vs Abaqus comparison helps if a lighter tool could cover some of the work.
  8. Rerun the numbers in the license audit calculator and confirm the final order form matches.

Questions buyers ask

How much does an Ansys Mechanical or Fluent license cost per year?

Typical 2025-2026 market ranges run $14,000 to $32,000 per solver seat per year, with $22,000 a working benchmark. Enterprise multiphysics bundles with HPC run $38,000 to $65,000 or more. Compare your itemized quote against these ranges.

How many cores does a base Ansys solver seat include?

A base solver seat runs on 4 cores. Using more cores needs HPC packs or workgroup licensing, which buyers report at $8,000 to $28,000 a year to scale to 32-128 cores. Ask the quote to state the total core count unlocked.

When is Ansys elastic or cloud burst licensing cheaper than a lease?

Divide the annual lease by your quoted elastic cost per solver-hour to get breakeven hours. As a house benchmark, seats running fewer than about 28 hours a week are often cheaper on pay-per-use; heavily used seats usually belong on a lease.

What data do I need to audit an Ansys renewal?

Twelve months of license server logs showing solver-run hours and cores per job, an itemized quote with core counts and term dates, and written elastic rates and rollover rules. Your workstation and cluster core counts complete the picture.

Do Ansys elastic units roll over?

Terms vary by agreement, so ask in writing before buying. A prepaid balance that expires at year-end can turn a flexible option into waste if usage falls short.
