India rate card
India Engineering GCC & CAD/FEA BPO Hub (Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai): 2026 FTE Rate Cards, ISO 27001 Audits & Attrition SLAs
Dedicated Indian CAD and FEA bureaus bill typical 2025-2026 rates of $12-$18/hr for 2D drafting and $20-$32/hr for 3D modelling and FEA, or $1,950-$3,600 per FTE-month. The real cost adds an 18% internal QA buffer and, for US buyers doing qualified research, a year-one tax drag of about 20.3% of the spend under Section 174's 15-year foreign amortization. Whether to buy from a bureau or build a captive centre depends mostly on team size and how long you will keep it.
01The 2026 rate card in US dollars
Indian engineering services firms quote in US dollars for export work, either per hour or per dedicated full-time equivalent (FTE) per month. A dedicated FTE is a named engineer working only on your account, usually on a 160-hour month. The table uses Engineer Aid's house benchmarks; quotes vary with seat count, software licensing, shift timing and contract length.
Two pricing details change comparisons. First, ask whether the CAD licence is included. A bureau supplying its own SOLIDWORKS or Revit seat prices it into the rate; a bureau using your licences through remote access should be cheaper. Second, ask whether the FTE rate covers a team lead or QA checker, or whether those are billed as extra seats. A team of ten production drafters often carries one lead, which adds about 10% to the effective rate.
| Work type | Hourly range | House benchmark | Per FTE-month (160 hrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2D drafting, as-builts, legacy conversion | $12-$18 | $14/hr | $2,240 |
| BIM modelling and MEP shop drawings | $12-$18 | $14/hr | $2,240 |
| 3D CAD: SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Creo | $18-$32 | $18/hr | $2,880 |
| Structural steel detailing | $12-$18 | $14/hr | $2,240 |
| FEA and CFD simulation | $20-$32 | $26/hr | $4,160 |
| Overall dedicated FTE band | - | - | $1,950-$3,600 typical |
FEA seats at the $26/hr house benchmark land above the typical FTE band because they need experienced analysts and solver licences. Price them separately from drafting.
02GCC vs BPO: build a centre or buy capacity
There are three common models.
- Managed bureau (BPO): you buy FTEs or hours from an established engineering services firm. Fast to start, no Indian entity needed, and the vendor carries hiring and attrition risk.
- Global capability centre (GCC): your own Indian subsidiary employs the engineers. You control hiring, IP and culture, but carry entity setup, leadership, office, payroll compliance and transfer pricing. Indian transfer pricing rules govern how the subsidiary charges the parent; check current safe harbour terms with an adviser.
- Build-operate-transfer (BOT): a vendor builds and runs the team, then transfers it to your entity after an agreed period for an agreed fee.
A rule of thumb: below about 25 engineers, a bureau is usually cheaper once leadership and setup are counted. Above about 50, with a multi-year horizon, a GCC usually wins on unit cost and control. BOT suits buyers who expect to cross that line but do not want to build from zero.
Example: when does a GCC pay back?
Suppose a bureau charges $2,880 per 3D FTE-month and a GCC's fully loaded cost is an assumed $2,300, with an assumed one-time setup of $400,000. For 40 FTEs, the monthly saving is 40 x $580 = $23,200, so payback is $400,000 / $23,200 = 17.2 months. The GCC figures are illustrative inputs; replace them with your own build budget.
| Model | Time to start | Who carries attrition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed bureau (BPO) | Weeks | Vendor | Under about 25 FTEs, variable demand |
| Build-operate-transfer | Months | Vendor, then you | Planned growth past 25-50 FTEs |
| Captive GCC | Months to a year | You | 50+ FTEs, multi-year, sensitive IP |
03Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai
The four hubs overlap, but each has a center of gravity that affects hiring depth.
- Pune: automotive, industrial machinery and heavy engineering. Deep pools for mechanical design, sheet metal, plastics and manufacturing engineering.
- Bengaluru: aerospace, electronics, semiconductors and embedded systems, alongside the largest concentration of technology GCCs. Strong for simulation, PLM and software-heavy engineering, and the most competitive for talent.
- Hyderabad: fast GCC growth, aerospace component work and life sciences. Often chosen for new captive centres.
- Chennai: automotive and manufacturing, with a strong base in vehicle engineering and tooling.
Rates in the house benchmark apply across all four. The difference shows up in attrition and time to fill: the more GCCs competing in a city for your discipline, the more an engineer can move for a raise. Ask the vendor for its own attrition rate by city and discipline over the last 12 months, in writing.
04ISO 27001, data handling and what to audit
A certificate is a starting point, not proof that your files are safe. Ask for:
- ISO/IEC 27001 scope statement: the certificate must cover the site and the service delivering your work, not just head office.
- Statement of Applicability: which controls the vendor applies and which it excludes.
- ISO 9001: for the drafting and checking process, including redline checklists.
- Automotive buyers: ask whether the site holds a TISAX label if your OEM customers require it.
Technical controls to verify on a site visit or video audit: work through virtual desktops with no local file storage, USB and print disabled, named accounts on your PDM or PLM vault, and logged access. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 applies to personal data the vendor handles; engineering drawings rarely contain much, but title blocks and project logs can.
Export-controlled work is different. ITAR technical data cannot be sent to an Indian bureau without US authorization, and EAR-controlled data may need a licence. Classify every work package before it leaves your network. The ITAR/EAR playbook covers the split.
05Attrition clauses that protect your schedule
Attrition is the main hidden cost in Indian engineering teams. When a trained engineer leaves, the replacement needs weeks to reach full speed on your standards. At $2,880 a month, a 3D FTE costs about $665 a week. If a replacement works at 50% for 6 weeks, you lose 6 x $665 x 0.5 = $1,995 of output per departure, plus your own engineers' time to retrain. With 25% annual attrition on a 20-person team, that is 5 departures and about $9,975 a year, before schedule slips.
Clauses to write in:
- Backfill SLA: a named replacement within an agreed number of business days.
- Overlap at vendor cost: the departing and new engineer overlap for a set period, not billed to you.
- Ramp credit: reduced billing for the replacement's first weeks.
- Key-person clause: named leads cannot be moved to another client without notice and approval.
- Rate escalation cap: annual increases capped in writing, since salary inflation is passed through in many contracts.
- Exit and handover: all files, standards and templates returned on termination, with a defined transition period.
See the dedicated CAD/BIM FTE contract audit for clause wording to check.
06The Section 174 effect for US buyers
Since the 2025 law change that created Section 174A, US companies can again expense domestic research costs immediately. Foreign research costs did not get that relief: they must be capitalised and amortised over 15 years, with only about 3.33% deducted in year one under the mid-year convention. They are also excluded from Section 41 credit QREs.
Example: a 10-person India team of six 3D CAD FTEs and four FEA FTEs.
- Monthly: (6 x $2,880) + (4 x $4,160) = $17,280 + $16,640 = $33,920
- Annual: $33,920 x 12 = $407,040
- 18% QA buffer: $73,267; landed $480,307
- If the FEA work is qualified research: $16,640 x 12 = $199,680 x 20.3% = $40,535 year-one cash-tax drag
The drag is mostly timing, recovered over 15 years, but it is real cash in year one. Even with it, the team costs far less than ten US agency engineers at about $189,700 each, or $1,897,000. The decision is rarely India vs US on price; it is which work goes where. Keep production drafting, which is not research, on separate purchase orders from design experimentation so tax can classify each. Run your mix through the staffing vs outsourcing TCO calculator.

Questions buyers ask
What does a dedicated CAD drafter in India cost per month?
Typical 2025-2026 rates for dedicated Indian CAD and BIM FTEs run $1,950 to $3,600 per month. Engineer Aid's house benchmark is $2,240 per month for 2D drafting at $14 per hour and $2,880 for 3D CAD at $18 per hour, on a 160-hour month. Add 18% for your own QA review.
What is the hourly rate for FEA outsourcing in India?
Typical rates for 3D modelling, FEA and CFD are $20 to $32 per hour. The house benchmark for FEA and CFD is $26 per hour, or $4,160 per FTE-month, which sits above the drafting FTE band because analysts and solver licences cost more.
Should we build a GCC in India or use an engineering BPO?
Below about 25 engineers a managed bureau is usually cheaper once leadership and setup are counted. Above about 50 engineers with a multi-year plan, a captive GCC usually wins on unit cost and control. Build-operate-transfer suits teams expected to cross that line.
How does Section 174 affect offshore engineering in India?
Foreign research spend must be amortised over 15 years, with about 3.33% deducted in year one, and it is excluded from Section 41 credits. At a 21% tax rate the year-one cash drag is about 20.3% of the foreign research spend. Production drafting that is not research is not affected.
What attrition clauses should an India engineering contract include?
Include a backfill SLA with a named replacement deadline, overlap at vendor cost, ramp credits for new engineers, a key-person clause for leads, a cap on annual rate escalation, and a defined exit handover. Ask for the vendor's 12-month attrition by city and discipline in writing.
