Offshore CAD comparison
Indovance vs. IndiaCADworks vs. Alpha CAD Service: Dedicated CAD/BIM FTE Rates, QA Buffers & SLAs
Dedicated offshore CAD and BIM staff typically cost $2,240 a month for 2D drafting, $2,880 for 3D modeling and $4,160 for FEA or CFD, so $14 to $26 an hour. The true landed cost is higher: add about 18% for US-side review, and if the work is research and development, a Year-1 cash-tax drag of about 20.3% under Section 174. Three 3D modelers then land at about $143,400 in Year 1, against roughly $569,000 for three US contractors.
01The short answer: the monthly rate is only the starting number
Indovance, IndiaCADworks and Alpha CAD Service are offshore CAD, BIM and engineering service bureaus of the kind US firms use for drafting, modeling, shop drawings and detailing. Quotes from bureaus like these usually fall inside the same market ranges, so the headline rate rarely decides the deal. What decides it is what the rate includes and how much of your own engineers' time the work consumes.
Three adjustments turn a quote into a landed cost:
- Hours per FTE. A monthly price for a dedicated full-time equivalent (FTE) only compares with an hourly quote once you know the hours. We use 160 a month.
- QA buffer. Your senior engineers or PE will review and redline what comes back. Budget about 18% on top of the bureau billing; buyers report 15% to 25% when checklists and redline service levels are missing.
- Tax treatment. If the work counts as research and experimental (R&E) spending, foreign R&E is amortized over 15 years under Section 174, while domestic R&E can be expensed under Section 174A.

02Offshore CAD and BIM rate benchmarks by discipline
These are typical 2025-2026 market ranges for dedicated offshore resources. Observed hourly rates run $12 to $18 for 2D drafting, BIM and shop drawings, and $20 to $32 for 3D modeling, FEA and CFD. Monthly dedicated FTE quotes commonly fall between $1,950 and $3,600 for drafting and modeling, higher for simulation.
| Discipline | Hourly benchmark | Monthly FTE | Annual FTE | Annual with 18% QA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D drafting, BIM, detailing | $14 | $2,240 | $26,880 | $31,718 |
| 3D CAD (SOLIDWORKS, Inventor) | $18 | $2,880 | $34,560 | $40,781 |
| FEA / CFD simulation | $26 | $4,160 | $49,920 | $58,906 |
The QA buffer changes the effective hourly rate: $14 becomes $16.52, $18 becomes $21.24 and $26 becomes $30.68. At the 25% top of the observed range, $18 becomes $22.50. Those adjusted figures are the ones to compare with a US contractor or a domestic drafting firm.
03Dedicated FTE vs. hourly vs. per-drawing pricing
Bureaus commonly offer three ways to buy. Ask every bureau for all three on the same scope, then pick the one that matches how steady your work is.
- Dedicated FTE. A named person or team works only on your account for a fixed monthly fee. Best when you have steady volume for at least six months. Risk: you pay for idle weeks between projects.
- Hourly, time and materials. You pay for hours logged. Best for uneven demand. Risk: hours grow with revisions, and you need a way to check timesheets.
- Per drawing or per deliverable. A fixed price per sheet, model or family. Best for repeatable work such as legacy 2D-to-3D conversion. Risk: scope arguments over what counts as one drawing or one revision.
A simple test for FTE pricing: divide the monthly fee by the hours you will actually use. A $2,880 FTE used 120 hours a month costs $24 an hour, not $18. If your load is uneven, an hourly rate of $20 to $22 can be cheaper than a dedicated seat.
Time zones work in your favor only if the handoff is planned. Send tasks before the end of your day with a complete brief, and review returns first thing in the morning. A team that sends half-specified tasks loses the overnight advantage to clarification emails, and the QA buffer rises with every lost day.
04Worked example: three 3D modelers for one year
A product company needs three full-time 3D modelers for a year of design work that qualifies as R&E. Compare a dedicated offshore team with three US contractors through a staffing agency at $60 an hour pay and a 52% markup.
| Line item | Offshore dedicated FTEs | US agency contractors |
|---|---|---|
| Base cost | 3 x $2,880 x 12 = $103,680 | 3 x $91.20 x 2,080 = $569,088 |
| US QA buffer (18%) | $18,662 | Included in team workflow |
| Year-1 Sec. 174 cash-tax drag (20.3%) | $21,047 | $0 (domestic, expensed) |
| Year-1 landed cost | $143,389 | $569,088 |
The tax line is timing, not a permanent cost: the foreign R&E is still deducted, but over 15 years, with only 3.33% (one thirtieth, under the mid-year convention) in Year 1. At a 21% federal rate the Year-1 drag is 21% x (1 - 0.0333) = 20.3% of the spend. Routine production drafting that is not R&E does not carry this drag; ask your tax adviser how your scope is classified. Even with every adjustment, the offshore team costs about a quarter of the US option, if output per hour is comparable. That last condition is what the SLA must protect.
05Why the QA buffer grows, and how to keep it at 18% or less
Offshore work comes back overnight, which is a real advantage. The cost appears when it comes back wrong: missed code requirements, your drafting standard not followed, a revision interpreted differently. Each round trip loses a day and consumes senior review time. Buyers report review overhead of 15% to 25% when there is no shared checklist and no service level for redlines.
Controls that keep the buffer low:
- A written CAD standard. Layers, title blocks, dimensioning, naming, templates. Send it before the first task.
- A first-pass acceptance rate. Track the share of deliverables accepted without redlines. Set a target in the SLA and review it monthly.
- Redline turnaround. State how many hours the bureau has to return corrections, and whether corrections of its own errors are billable.
- A single point of contact. A named team lead on the bureau side who checks work before it is sent.
- A pilot. Two to four weeks on real work before signing a 12-month FTE agreement.
06SLA and contract clauses to compare across bureaus
Put each bureau's proposal into this grid. A bureau that cannot answer a row in writing should not win on price alone.
| Clause | What to ask | Buyer-side target |
|---|---|---|
| Turnaround | Standard and rush turnaround by deliverable type | Stated in hours, with a rush premium in writing |
| Error corrections | Are fixes to the bureau's own errors billable? | No charge for bureau-caused errors |
| First-pass acceptance | Is there a measured target? | Target in the SLA, reported monthly |
| Staff continuity | Notice and handover if a dedicated FTE leaves | Overlap period at no extra cost |
| Security certification | ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certificates and their scope | Current certificates covering the delivery site |
| IP assignment | Who owns the files and any improvements | Full assignment to you on payment |
| Termination | Notice period for an FTE agreement | 30 days, no penalty after a pilot |
07Data security and export control
Before any file leaves your network, classify it. ITAR-controlled technical data generally cannot be shared with foreign persons without authorization under 22 CFR 120-130, and EAR-controlled data has its own licensing rules. That usually rules offshore bureaus out for defense work, whatever the price. See the aerospace and defense ITAR playbook for the controls that apply.
For commercial work, ask each bureau for:
- its ISO 27001 certificate and the sites it covers;
- how files move: through your own vault or PDM with named accounts, or by email and file transfer;
- whether staff can copy files to local drives or removable media;
- how files are deleted at the end of the engagement, and in what form you get confirmation.
Working inside your own PDM or vault, with accounts you can switch off, is the strongest control and the easiest to audit.
08How to run a fair three-bureau comparison
- Write one scope: discipline, software and version, standards, monthly volume, turnaround and security needs.
- Ask each bureau for FTE, hourly and per-deliverable prices on that scope.
- Convert every price to an effective hourly rate at your real usage, then add the QA buffer.
- Run a paid pilot with the two best offers on the same real task and measure first-pass acceptance.
- Sign a 12-month agreement only with the SLA grid above filled in.

Questions buyers ask
How much does a dedicated offshore CAD drafter cost per month?
Typical 2025-2026 benchmarks are about $2,240 a month for 2D drafting or BIM, $2,880 for 3D CAD modeling and $4,160 for FEA or CFD, based on 160 hours a month. Observed dedicated FTE quotes for drafting and modeling commonly range from $1,950 to $3,600 a month.
What is the real cost of offshore CAD outsourcing after review time?
Add about 18% for US-side senior engineer or PE review and redlines, and 15% to 25% if there are no checklists or redline service levels. An $18 an hour 3D modeler then costs about $21.24 an hour in practice.
Does Section 174 affect offshore engineering costs?
If the work counts as research and experimental spending, foreign R&E must be amortized over 15 years, with only 3.33% deductible in Year 1. At a 21% federal rate that creates a Year-1 cash-tax drag of about 20.3% of the spend. Routine production drafting that is not R&E is treated differently, so confirm classification with your tax adviser.
Is a dedicated FTE cheaper than hourly offshore CAD?
Only if you keep the FTE busy. A $2,880 monthly FTE used 160 hours costs $18 an hour, but used 120 hours it costs $24 an hour. For uneven workloads, an hourly rate of $20 to $22 can be cheaper than a dedicated seat.
Can ITAR drawings be sent to an offshore CAD bureau?
Generally not without authorization. ITAR-controlled technical data cannot be shared with foreign persons unless the export is licensed or exempt under 22 CFR 120-130, so classify every file before it leaves your network and keep defense work with US-person resources.
